Writing

Lately I have been thinking a lot about the writing process. So many times I start out a weekend day planning to write. Usually those are the times I don’t write, or I write very little. For me, the best time to write is when it starts with a tug. I can physically feel the tug within me. It’s a feeling of anticipation, like I am about to see my best friend who I have not seen in a long time. It’s the anticipation of getting the first hug from a grand girl who holds on so tight my eyes start to leak. The feeling is real.

Today is one of those days. My husband, Vernon, says he can see it on me. He says I get into a zone. He’s right. I feel that too. I also feel the butterflies and the joy of writing. It’s me. It’s my calling.

All this does not mean that it flows perfectly like a light flowy skirt might do in a light breeze. No, I get stuck, I get challenged and personally, that just keeps me going. Usually when I feel the tug, the words just “bleed” (from a quote in one of my daily Instagram stories in August) across the screen. It’s in those moments that the writing makes the most sense. Although, there are also times when I read over the writing from those moments and wonder what made me write that!

Writing the details can get me stuck. I am very focused when it comes to writing details such as family connections and pieces of stories from a previous book. Going back and forth, finding the specific details becomes a pattern. I think of it like a paint brush in the hands of an artist as the brush moves up and down or side to side, flowing and creating as she moves. Then suddenly the brush takes a life of its’ own and the painting amazes the artist.

It is in that moment that the true life (and story) of the book happens for me, and it amazes me.

I hope that the reader finds the same.

My books are available here.
