Support of Local Businesses

As a local (New Mexico) author, I have learned even more how important it is to support local businesses. Every state and town has them. It’s our jobs to support them. I know there have been times we have visited a local restaurant or shop and did not go back as much as we should have or wanted to, then we hear they had to close for whatever reason. It makes me sad we did not help keep them going. Of course, we cannot keep every business going, but when we all contribute it makes a difference.

So far, this year I have been blessed and thankful for the businesses that have supported my books.

First, my book launch at Noisy Water Albuquerque, in Old Town was a wonderful experience. Sharing space with my son, singer song writer, Chris Baker, sipping amazing wine and making new friends left me blown away and without words.

My first book signing after the release of Way of the Canyon at Treasure House Books also was wonderful. I did my first ever reading from both books. It felt great to read it out loud and to meet new readers who were interested in my books. That piece never fails to astonish and humble me. The simple fact that someone wants to read my writing is very special.

I also had great opportunities in Las Cruces, NM where our son, Chris, and his family live. Another great bookstore, COAS Books in downtown hosted a signing. This is a busy and lively store full of happy and friendly people. It was the second time I had a book signing there. When my first book, Into the Canyon, released in 2023 I had such a great experience, I contacted them again with the second book. I have plans to go back for book 3 after it releases.

Sombra Antigua Winery south of Las Cruces also hosted me the same weekend. It was so much fun. Being there with Chris and his wife, Paige, while Chris did his music was really perfect.

Finally, I very recently had a book signing at another local Albuquerque bookstore, Page 1 Books. If you have not shopped this bookstore, make a point to go check them out. It is a big store full of every kind of book you can imagine. I bought a book I had been looking for and was excited to purchase it. Every person working at Page 1 made us feel welcome.

Again, keep these and many other local businesses in mind next time you step out to eat, shop and look for entertainment. The culture of local is rich. We can all do a little to keep them going when we all do our part!
